Netherby & Hill, Betty's Bay

Story of the 4 sisters. Approximately 50 years ago there were 4 sisters who drew straws for the 3 houses on top of the hill overlooking the main beach in Bettys Bay. The 4th straw was for a hill top plot & a house removed from the hill. My client drew the 4th straw. After selling their own Cape Town house, they were able to build on the plot.

The project had a limited budget which partly influenced the style of the roofs. The 2 gables are bridged by a central roof that accommodates an upper Loft area which scales the house under the required accommodation.  It was of utmost importance that the view be achieved both towards the ocean and the mountain. Hence the main part of the house is a glass box, but with a covered outside area on the lake side.

The second house, Hill House, next door to Netherby that I worked on was also extended adding a wing which captured the spectacular views & light, but most importantly kept the style of the existing house, modernizing the extension with the  use of the glass boxed ends on either side .
